Sometimes I come to understand just how important the institution of family is—how deeply it shapes a person’s character and spirit. “Father, mother, brother, sister”—or at its bare minimum, “father and mother.” An institution I didn’t benefit much from, and even sensing its presence is painful for me. I recognize the schemas it created inside me, and I fully understand their connection to “family.” I wonder: isn’t this a natural right for every human being? How am I supposed to define justice in God? And how am I supposed not to resent the people who brought me into this world, for this absence in my life? It leads me more than always to hate my very existence, to suffer— and yet, I’m forced to keep living.
